Windows Vista and Windows 7 launch a cmd.exe window differently than Windows XP did. With the introduction of Mac OS X and its UNIX underpinnings, even Macs can launch a command line. Click the tab below to see how each operating system launches a command line interface.

  1. Click the “Windows” menu (or it may be labeled “Start” if you have the Classic theme enabled on your system).
  2. Enter “CMD” in the search field right above the “Windows” Menu button. start > CMD (Windows Vista/7)
